The American Hosta Society Convention Auction, is a major fund raiser for the American Hosta Society. Proceeds from the auction help fund the activities and publications of the Society. A successful Auction depends upon donations of plants and garden themed items.
By far the largest number of donations are hostas - large specimens of common hostas; rare and unusual; exciting seedlings; and everything in between. Donations of companion plants, shrubs or trees, add variety to the auction - shade loving; new; or the unusual. Hosta and garden themed items are always hot items too.
Donating is easy. If registering for the convention, indicate on your registration the number and types of items you will donate. Then bring them along to the convention and drop them off at the Auction Items Receiving location. Want to donate but forgot to fill it in on your registration form? No problem. The check off on the registration form helps in planning the logistics of the Auction, but additional Auction Items are always welcomed. Not attending but would like to donate? Just bring them to the Auction Items Receiving location. Check out the Convention Schedule for Auction receiving times and location.
The Auction is Friday evening and is open to all Convention Attendees and the public. All you need is a bid number to participate. For registered Convention Attendees, your bid number is your badge number - no need to register for the Auction. For those who are not a registered Convention Attendee, register for a free bid number at the Auction Checkout station. Registration for a free bid number is during the Auction Preview just prior to the start of the Auction. Check the Convention Schedule for Auction Preview time and location.
A list of all items on the Auction Block will be available during the Auction Preview. As you browse, you'll be able to check off the 'hot' items you have your eye on!
Bidding is easy. When your 'hot' item or that 'special' item you missed checking off on your list, is up on the Auction Block, raise your hand high and keep it high until either you're the winner or the price is too high for your pocketbook. Pay close attention, as bidding can be 'fast and furious'. If you are the winner, shout your bid number out so the Auction Recorders can record your win.
First time attendee and not sure if you want to bid on anything? Plan on attending the Auction anyway. The Auctioneers are an entertaining and lively group - there are sure to be some laughs during the action. Plus usually there are a few items that even first time attendees have a chance to win! Winning bids can range from low for the more common items to high for the rare and unusual, so everyone has a chance to go home a winner. It is always exciting to witness the items that bring in the high bids! How high will they go!
At the end of the Auction, to collect your winnings, check out at the Auction Checkout station First pick up your auction invoice at the "Start", and then proceed to pay the cashier. Check, cash or Credit Card are accepted. Once you have paid your invoice, Auction Runners, will bring you your auction winnings. Then you're all set to bring home your new 'hosta babies' and other winnings.
